Give me Scotland or I die!

John Knox was one of the most influential theologians and church leaders in history. As the leader of the Scottish Reformation, his impact on Scotland was profound. Through his preaching and leadership, the gospel spread across the nation, and he became the founding figure of what would become the Presbyterian Church of Scotland.

When Knox died in 1572, he was buried beside St. Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh. Today, his burial site is marked by a simple plaque in a parking lot. When I visited, a car was parked directly over his grave. Had someone not placed a marker there, the location would likely have been lost among the asphalt and surrounding buildings.

Standing there reminded me of the words of Nikolaus von Zinzendorf: “Preach the gospel, die, and be forgotten.”

Though Knox’s grave is easily overlooked, his life was anything but insignificant. Mary, Queen of Scots is famously reported to have said, “I fear the prayers of John Knox more than all the assembled armies of Europe.” Knox carried a deep burden for the spiritual condition of his nation and is remembered for the prayer, “Lord, give me Scotland, or I die!”

What a powerful reminder for all of us. Our calling is not to build our own legacy, but to make Christ known. We live, we serve, we tell as many people as possible about the goodness of Jesus, and one day we die and see Him face to face. Whether our names are remembered or forgotten matters little. What matters is that Christ is exalted and His gospel continues to transform lives long after we are gone.
